Municipal Services in Tenafly
Trash Collection
Curbside trash collection is provided twice weekly for residential properties by a contracted hauler.
- ●Collection days are typically Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday depending on location
- ●Trash must be in sealed containers or bags and placed at the curb by 6:00 AM
- ●Maximum of 6 containers or 10 bags per collection
- ●Bulk item pickup is available by appointment
- ●Holiday schedules are posted on the borough website
Recycling
Weekly curbside recycling collection for all residential properties, coordinated through the Bergen County Utilities Authority.
- ●Single-stream recycling collected once per week
- ●Accepted: paper, cardboard, glass, plastics #1-#7, metal cans
- ●Do not include plastic bags, styrofoam, or food waste
- ●Yard waste collected separately in spring, summer, and fall
- ●Recycling drop-off also available at the DPW yard
Water & Sewer
Water is provided by Veolia Water. Sewer service is managed by the borough and treated by the Bergen County Utilities Authority.
- ●Water bills are issued quarterly
- ●Sewer charges are included in the tax billing
- ●Annual water quality reports are available online
- ●Contact Veolia for water service issues or new connections
- ●Backflow prevention devices may be required for certain properties
Building & Zoning Permits
The Building Department oversees all construction and zoning permit applications. Permits are required for most exterior and interior modifications.

- ●Overnight parking restrictions on most borough streets
- ●Parking enforcement is active in the downtown area
Leaf Collection
Seasonal leaf collection for all residential properties during fall months.
- ●Loose leaf collection runs from mid-October through mid-December
- ●Leaves should be raked to the curb, not into the street
- ●Do not mix leaves with branches or other materials
- ●Multiple passes through each neighborhood during the season
